According to Brooklyn Vegan, Beth Orton recently covered Leonard Cohen’s “Sisters of Mercy” at played NYC’s Zankel Hall on December 3, as part of Carnegie Hall’s Late Nights at Zankel series.
Orton had covered this song to tribute Leonard Cohen, who had passed away at age 82. The song was part of the album Songs of Leonard Cohen, and was produced with the help of John Hammond and John Simon. This song, and also for the song “Master Song”, was arranged to have the guitar parts played by the jazz bassist Willie Ruff, and also other top session musicians. Later on, John Hammond left the production due to sickness and John Simon took over. According to Forbes, “Sister of Mercy spoke to Cohen’s monastic aspirations and his fluency in the language of spirituality even in traditions not his own.”
This series was a part of a two date North American tour Orton had planned. Orton had planned this out to support her recent album release Kidstick through ANTI-.
