WATCH: Electric Würms Release Clip of New Cover of The Carpenters’ “Superstar”

Today on Instagram, Wayne Coyne posted a clip of a new track from his side project Electric Würms, formed with fellow The Flaming Lips member Steven Drozd as well as the band Linear Downfall. The post is labeled “…New Electric Würms track…” and features Coyne playing keyboards and singing the lyrics to that classic 70s single from Downy, CA’s own The Carpenters, as another member sits at a computer. A favorite for many indie rock bands to cover, this version has a pulsating krautrock bassline, those loud rock-n-roll drums that The Lips are famous for and a playful riff during the transitions care of Coyne’s Roland Juno-106. Check out the short video clip below:

The band released their debut LP Muzik Die Schwer Zu Twerk in 2014. That album spawned another cover that became a single, “Heart Of The Sunrise” by Yes, plus they released a cover of “Fixin’ A Hole” by the Beatles, proving they are no stranger to imaginative and interpretive covers.

Coyne and Drozd are quite busy with their main gig, as The Flaming Lips are due to release their new record, Oczy Mlody on January 13, plus they will be going on tour to support the recording in the spring of 2017. Judging from the quality of the band’s first singles, “The Castle” and “How??”, this record has all the makings of another classic from the long-running and influential psychedelic pop group.
