Rainer Maria @ Saint Vitus Bar 1/1

Rainer Maria first started writing songs back in 1995, carving a rare place for themselves in a not-quite-yet developed harder emo rock scene, until the band decided to call it quits in 2006 for personal reasons. But, this Brooklyn-based via Wisconsin trio has thrown in a few reunion shows here and there over the past few years, including NYE and New Year’s Day this year—inviting fans to come back and celebrate with the band they once loved, and also inspiring new fans to discover them for the first time.

With that being said, there’s something about Rainer Maria’s sound that’s sort of timeless. Even their albums from the late 90s, Past Worn Searching and Look Now Look Again sound incredibly modern and relevant. Their music is dark and heavy in places like a Sunny Day Real Estate, is punchier in others similar to Modest Mouse, and then is gritty-angelic with Caithlin De Marrais’s voice hovering overhead, as heard in a band like Straylight Run. Their songs are full of energy, poetry, angst—music that’s perfectly light and serious exactly where it’s supposed to be—leaving listeners in a prime spot to feel as high or as low as they want to. (Isn’t that a perk about emo music?)

To watch a band like Rainer Maria who’s been together for over twenty years play live is a rarity these days, and who knows when another reunion tour is in the works, so seeing this band play in Brooklyn is a must.
