The Obsessed; a heavy metal band from Maryland led by Scott “Wino” Weinrich that combines elements of doom metal, stoner rock and punk rock have released a new recording revisiting one of their first releases, “the Sodden Jackal 7” from 1983. This new release is a recording of the classic track for Adult Swim and being titled as “Sodden Jackyl” and is streamable for the first time.
The Obsessed formed in 1976 and then announced their first split up in 1986 when Wino joined Saint Vitus and subsequently reformed four years later. After releasing three albums (including the one that was originally recorded in 1985), The Obsessed broke up for a second time in 1995. Since then they have occasionally reunited for some shows followed by an announcement for their third reunion in March 2016. Their last recording was 1994’s major label debut, The Church Within. Now comes word that the band The song is streamable below for the first time.
If the release of this newly streamable classic track wasn’t an indication that the stoner / doom metal band are back in full swing the fact they have signed to Relapse and will soon release their new LP, Sacred was a pretty good indication that a full-fledged reunion is afoot. Even though Sacred was recorded with Brian Constantino and Dave Sherman, since then Sherman has made an exit leaving Wino, Bruce Falkinburg, Sara Seraphim and Constantino making this the first time in over 35 years that the Obsessed have been a four piece band. Not much has been released about Sacred other than it will be released on Relapse and has a tentative release being set for 2017. Until more info is available such as a track list or single is released take heart in the news that they are coming back (probably with doom and a vengeance)!
