Her lyrics are soaked with emotion. Her voice is shaky, powdery, and feeble. Her electric guitar is dominating—much more so than your typical singer-songwriter’s. This is Margaret Glaspy.
She broke into the NYC music scene with her EP If & When, released back in 2012—a solid introduction to her unique voice—and this year she just released her first full-length album called Emotions and Math. The music is thicker and darker on this album, as heard in “Love Like This” as she sings “People lie, cheat, kill for love like this. Few have known, seen, failed love like this.” And then on “You and I” with lyrics: “Tonight I’m a little too turned on to talk about us, and tomorrow I’ll be too turned off and won’t give a f*ck about you and I.” And there’s also something sultry about her sound, laden with passion and heavily influenced by Elliot Smith and Joni Mitchell. At first sight one might wonder how such powerful music can come from such a delicate singer, but that’s part of her mysterious charm.
Glaspy is signed with ATO Records and has opened for Alabama Shakes, Rayland Baxter and the Milk Carton Kids (just to name a few). Looks like her decision to leave Berklee and discover her own way in music worked out for the best, after all.
