In 2015, eclectic folk artist Laura Marling went electric on the album Short Movie, breaking with her more traditional sound established on her first five albums. Her newly announced album Semper Femina, due out via Marling’s own label More Alarming Records on March 10, marks a further stylistic shift.
According to Marling, Semper Femina breaks prescribed confines of gender and sexuality.
“I started out writing Semper Femina as if a man was writing about a woman,” Marling said through press release. “And then I thought it’s not a man, it’s me — I don’t need to pretend it’s a man to justify the intimacy of the way I’m looking and feeling about women. It’s me looking specifically at women and feeling great empathy towards them and by proxy towards myself.”
Semper Femina, Marling sixth overall album, was produced entirely by Blake Mills. Marling primarily recorded the album while touring in support of Short Movie. The album features nine tracks, including newly released lead single “Soothing.” Check out the album’s tracklist and artwork below.
Fans can pre-order Marling’s new album now. In March, she will embark on a short UK-based tour in support of Semper Femina.
