Mothers first started in Athens, GA as Kristine Leschper’s solo project. But after gaining some popularity in the small but very creative music scene there, Mothers then expanded into a full band. She had most of the songs already written on When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired, lyrics drenched with longing and personal darkness, and then finalized the album when the rest of the band joined.
When you listen to Leschper sing there’s a sense of brokenness to her voice, but it’s powerful in its vulnerability, especially in the way she sings lyrics like “I hate my body. I love your taste… You wore me like a necklace. You closed me like a locket, became something bloated with doubt, bullied by love, too small for eyes,” as heard in the album’s first track “Too Small For Eyes.” She pours out her heart, leaving nothing behind. Even when her voice is shaky and shrilled with emotion, there’s a dedication to her story, her sound, and it’s definitely something you want to pay attention to. You don’t actually have a choice.
Mothers play just a few shows on the east coast for their Reminding You Not To Bloom Tour, and you’ll find them at Brooklyn Bazaar on December 2. (If you’ve never been to BB, by the way, it’s a very industrial, all-in-one space with food, games, shopping, and of course music.) Mothers will play at the upstairs venue.
