American Rockband from Ohio Afghan Whigs released another beautiful cover to add to their track record. In an epic 20 anniversary deluxe reissue of the bands’ 1996 album Black Love, the band has added their cover of New Order’s 1993 song “Regret” as a bonus track. The song was originally released on New Order’s 1993 album Republic as the lead single, and Afghan Whigs made it their own. Leading man Greg Dulli transformed the song from a more upbeat and electric track, to a slow and intimate ballad on top of a passionate piano solo. While it may sound like a bit of a twist, Dulli not only manages to make it work, he makes it a hit.
Black Love was the bands’ fifth studio album following Gentlemen from 1993 and Congregation from 1992. The band split in 2001, claiming family obligations and geographic differences kept them from making new music together. However, dedicated fans rejoiced again in 2011, when the band announced they’d be getting back together and confirmed their appearance at several festivals including the Primavera Festival and Lollapalooza in 2012. Two years later, the band headlined at Mid Point, along with Panda Bear and Raveonettes.
The album will be released on Nov 25 and the band will be playing Black love in its entirety at a charity concert to benefit guitarist Dave Rosser. Be on the lookout for the next couple of days to snag your copy of Afghan Whig’s top greatest classics.
