After Donald Trump won the election last week, there has been a rise in the amount of biased attacks all across the nation. There have been reported acts of violence on Pro-Trump supporters and Anti-Trump protestors. Unfortunately one of the latest victims would be the New York City park in honor of Beastie Boys members Adam Yauch who passed away May 2012. After his tragic death as an influential musician and human rights activist, ceremonies were held renaming Palmetto Playground in Brooklyn, New York to Adam Yauch Park.
Yesterday, The Adam Yauch Park was vandalized with graffiti of swastikas and the words “Go Trump.” You may be wondering why of all parks would they target this one, but just like the rest of the members of the group Beastie Boys they were all jewish. Now, local politicians are banding together to announce a “stand up against hate” rally being held tomorrow at 11:30 am. The event is being organized by State Senator Daniel Squadron, Congresswomen Nydia Velasquez, along with city council members, elected officials, and other community and faith leaders. It has been confirmed that Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys will also be in attendance. As of now the graffiti has been removed and replaced with redecorations with hearts and chalk messages.
Adam Yauch is best known as an American rapper/musician of Beastie Boys, but has also contributed as a film director and a human rights activist. Back in 2009, Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous parotid gland and lymph node and was unsuccessfully treated. With his battle, he underwent surgery and radiation therapy delaying releases and the subsequent tours along with being unable to appear in music videos for the album. Unfortunately, he lost the battle and died on May 4, 2012 at the age of 47. His death was a harsh blow for the music industry, sparking many artists and musicians to pay tribute and honor his life.
