Legendary shoegaze group Lush announced earlier this week they will break up at this year’s end. They previously disbanded in 1996, and played their first show in over 20 years earlier this year.
Lush announced their breakup in a statement via Facebook. They will perform for the last time on November 25th at Manchester Academy. Former Modern English bass player Michael Conroy will perform with the group.
Bassist Phil King departed the band in October, forcing them to cancel two of their November tour dates. The breakup will not shock longtime fans, whom likely never expected the group to reunite in the first place.
Lush originally formed in London in 1987 at the height of the shoegaze era. They released four full-length albums before they originally broke up, and are considered one the most influential shoegaze bands in part due to their shift towards a more Britpop friendly sound. In addition to touring throughout 2016, Lush released a critically acclaimed four song EP and a career spanning boxset.
The core members of Lush have done little outside their work with the group. Lead singer Miki Berenyi has never released solo LP, while drummer Justin Welsh and guitarist Emma Anderson have both released music with short lived side projects.
