Gregg Allman, formerly of Allman Brothers Band fame, postponed all of his 2016 and early 2017 tour dates on Tuesday, explaining that a vocal injury had forced him to make the decision. He announced that he plans to devote the next few months to healing his voice, before he can make a return to the stage later on in 2017.
“This is the hardest thing I’ve had to do in a long, long, time,” he said in a statement. “I’ve been on the road for 45 years because I live to play music with my friends for my fans. As much as I hate it, it’s time for me to take some real time off to heal.”
The news comes only two days after he had just canceled two concerts at New York’s City Winery, showing that his need for recovery has become much more serious.
“Not making a show is a really hard decision for me because I want to play so bad, but it’s also hard on my partners and fans who make plans to be with me,” he said. “I never want to put anybody in a bad spot. I’m so grateful for the people that I work with and for the fans that come to my shows and I want to be at my best for all of them. That means I’m going to have to wait until I’m feeling really good, not just good enough like I have been. Good enough isn’t working for us all.”
The gigs at the City Winery have been transferred to July 2017. Earlier in August, Allman had canceled 28 tour dates due to “serious health issues,” even though he did return to the stage next month in Colorado and Atlanta.
In addition, although Allman will not be performing on November 9th or 10th at City Winery, the venue will host free concerts with the Gregg Allman Band.
