Thew new sci-fi western Westworld has been getting quite a number of looks these past weeks for the use of contemporary music in its primitive setting. The HBO series is based on a 1973 film that centers around a futuristic park where people can interact with robots and experience choreographed storylines while on their trip. Unfortunately as it usually goes, the robots start to have malfunction. What is so interesting about this show is the old time-ish versions of contemporary music. Some of the included music so far include Radiohead’s “No Surprises,” The Cure’s “A Forest,” Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” and even The Rolling Stones “Paint it, Black.” The piano covers of the tunes give a new feel for the songs, just like your walking through a wild wild west movie.
Now fans of the music can access these tracks in a new EP that was released by Westworld‘s resident music pro Ramin Djawadi who also looks after the music in the Game of Thrones. Westworld Season 1 is a five track EP playing off the show’s main titles. He has definitely made a name for himself by taking a prehistoric sound to contemporary music.
UPDATE (11/7): Last night’s episode packed a Radiohead double shot, first with “Fake Plastic Trees” being performed in the saloon while “Motion Picture Soundtrack” served as mood music for a tense scene in the park’s headquarters. Check them both out below:
