Ebba Tove Elsa Nisson, commonly known as Tove Lo, has released a 30-minute video called “Fairy Dust.” Tove Lo is a Swedish singer/songwriter who is notorious for her dark twist on pop music. Rolling Stones have referred to her as “Sweden’s darkest pop export.” Other media have referred to her as “The saddest girl in Sweden.” Lo has an unconventional approach to pop music by incorporating grunge-influences with honest, distraught and autobiographical lyrics.

Tove Lo’s short film, “Fairy Dust” begins with her stepping out of an elevator into a motel parking lot. As she walks across the parking lot you begin to see her chuck to herself. The video continually shows her laughing harder and harder into a maniac state. She mumbles to herself “Fuck This” as she gets to the bottom of a staircase. You begin to notice that she is walking up the stairs with a combination of maniac laughing and screaming. The laughing tone in her voice becomes drawn out and she begins to cry, then sob. The screen goes black and in white words, “There is nothing pure about the way we do things.”

The next scene in the video shows Tove Lo talking to herself in the mirror and walking around the motel room talking down about conventional ways of living. Discussing how people settle, get married to “fat” guys, talks about how she hates kids, weddings and so forth. “People are afraid of being alone. Not me. I like it. I like it. I’m independent. I live my life to the fullest. Oh my god, look at her fucking husband crying like a little bitch! Does she really think that fat fuck is going to be strong for her when she needs him?”

Throughout the video, the viewer is able to see her act out a scene and then transition into a song from her album. The songs included in the video are; “Fairy Dust”, “Influence”, “Lady Wood”, “True Disaster”, “Cool Girl”, “Vibes” and lastly, “What I Want For The Night (Bitches). Seemingly, the scenes become shorter and shorter between the music transitions. The videos are graphic and the lyrics exploit Tove Lo’s emotions. Finally, the last song ends and she says “You like that shit?”
