Los Angeles experimental hip hop outfit clipping. has never been the group to refrain from making political statements. MC Daveed Diggs even made a name for himself by starring in hit political history musical “Hamilton.” And with their new song “Fat Fingers,” the trio scathingly criticizes a particular politician who has been made fun of in the past (and lets be honest, still is being made fun of) for his thick digits.
The song was part of the “30 Days 40 Songs” Project (fka 30 Days 30 Songs) in which various artists contribute a song that “speak out against the ignorant, divisive, and hateful campaign of Donald Trump.”
The Washington Post describes the project as “a playlist of songs that Donald Trump will hate.”
Other prominent artists such as Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand have contributed to the project, with the songs “Million Dollar Loan” and “Demagogue” respectively.
On the 30 Days 40 Songs website, clipping. explained below the track that ”
When this project was first presented to us, we were asked to contribute our track “Knees on the Ground,” which was released on our SoundCloud back in 2014. The song is about the murder of a young, unarmed black person by an overzealous, militarized, racist police force. While that topic has not lost its relevance, we decided that it’s in some ways unrelated to the outcome of the current presidential race—racism in the US predates this particular contest by centuries and will certainly not be solved simply by keeping one overt white supremacist out of political office.”
In lieu of seriousness, the outfit has taken note of the sense of comedy and satire that have been a part of many of the other tracks released so far, and have contributed a far funnier song that “is set on a schoolyard, using drum sounds constructed from fists beating on metal lunch tables, benches, and dumpster lids.”
Along with the single, the group has released a lyric video, watch it below.
