Maggie Rogers, up and coming artist from New York University, has been turning celebrities heads with her vocals. Starting with debatably the most crucial celebrity in her career thus far, Pharrell Williams. Williams was teaching a Masterclass at The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU’S Tisch School of the Arts, when Rogers was a student. In the video, Roger’s plays an unfinished recording of “Alaska” and Williams is blown away with her talent. Check out the official music video below:
This song earned media attention immediately from Pitchfork, Slate, NPR, The Washington Post, Nylon, Stereogum and so on. Not only has she sprouted media attention from “Alaska”, but also even former first daughter, Chelsea Clinton, noted “Alaska” as her “Most Listened To Song” in a Marie Claire magazine issued this month.
Rogers grew up on a working farm in Maryland. She played the banjo and sang all her life. Roger’s incorporates naturalistic and environmental references in her lyrics and videos. She begins the first verse, “I was walking through the streams,” moving forward she sings, “Moving slowly through the westward water. Over glacial plains.” Then, the video shows her walking through a green field of some sort. Slowly, she begins to take off her hoodie and dance. Then, like the formation of crows, more people join her in dancing; starting with Roger’s at the front of the “V”.
