Yesterday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame revealed its list of nominees for the Class of 2017. The nominees feature a diverse set of artists across multiple genres, highlighted by near locks Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur.
Nominees notably include Depeche Mode, The Cars, Bad Brains, Janet Jackson, MC5, and Kraftwork. Last year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, Steve Miller, and NWA.
To be eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, each nominee must have issued their first official release in 1991 or earlier.
Multiple nominees on this year’s ballot have been nominated before. Chic have been nominated a record 11 times, while Joe Tex has been nominated five times, the J. Geils Band and Kraftwork four times, and Yes three times.
This is the first nomination for Bad Brains, Depeche Mode, Electric Light Orchestra, Jane’s Addiction, Joan Baez, Journey, Pearl Jam, Steppenwolf, and Tupac Shakur. Pearl Jam and Shakur qualify in their respective first year of eligibility–Pearl Jam released 10 and Shakur released 2Pacalypse Now in 1991.
Notable snubs include The Smiths and Nine Inch Nails. Both have received nominations in previous years.
The artists that receive the most votes will be announced in December and inducted next April at a ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. HBO will broadcast an edited version of the ceremony later in 2017.
