Calling him an enigma might be an understatement. Nonetheless, Maynard James Keenan is a topic of vast intrigue. He’s known primarily as a frontman to the bands Puscifier, A Perfect Circle and, most notably Tool. If those accomplishments aren’t impressive enough as is, add to that list martial artist, West Point graduate, and winemaker, among many other things. His life is a catalog of accolades.
Soon, Keenan will add ‘author’ to that list. He co-wrote book with Sarah Jensen entitled A Perfect Union of Contrary Things, which is an autobiographical memoir of his life. The book comes out on November 8.
The memoir will tell us much we don’t know about Keenan, especially his early life. Recently, Keenan shared some new information in an interview with the Rolling Stone, while promoting the book. Apparently, Keenan could have been the Rage Against the Machine frontman. In the interview, he talks about working with Tom Morello:
“Well, there wasn’t a Rage when I was working with Tom. I think he was working with Timmy [Commerford], perhaps. I can’t remember if Brad [Wilk] was drumming or not. This is very foggy at that time ’cause I didn’t know Brad yet, so you’d have to talk to Brad, find out if it was actually him. We actually were in a rehearsal space – this is after Lock Up [Morello’s former band] was dead and he was trying figuring out where he’s gonna go next, and so yeah, it was right around the same time all those things were happening.”
So could he have joined Rage? That answer isn’t really clear. But it now seems in the realm of possibility. Who knows what else we don’t know about Maynard James Keenan.
