Lizzo @ Subterranean 12/8

With the lack of female artists in the hip-hop scene, ladies like Lizzo are paving the way for a new generation of girls to take over the genre. She has participated in groups like Grrrl Party and Absynthe, as well as done tons of incredible solo work.

Lizzo, or as her family knows her, Melissa Jefferson, didn’t exactly come from the hip-hop hub of America. More like Texas. But her Southern beginnings didn’t hold her back in the least bit, instead pushing her to move to Minnesota and start performing with various groups in the music scene in Minneapolis. Her ability to switch between a bold voice and a badass rap persona is otherworldly.

She’s probably most well-known for her collaborations with impressive artists like Prince and Bastille. Her beautiful voice and emotionally striking lyrics have helped her make a name for herself within the music industry. With strong and independent women on the scene, hopefully it isn’t long before other girls are taking the music world by storm in every genre and respect.
