The Naked and Famous have shared a new single, “The Runners”, and its accompanying video.
The track will feature on upcoming album Simple Forms, which is out October 14th via their own label Damaged, in partnership with Kobalt Label Services. “The Runners” is part of the group’s ongoing visual series.
Both the “The Runners’” music and its visuals adhere to a disappointing template of sappy electronics and pop-tinged mainstream rock . The track itself features overtly saccharine vocals, which attempt to draw poetic pain from romantic struggles but instead stray into cliché. Sonically, “The Runners” does little to differentiate itself from the group’s previous output, relying heavily on airy synths and punk-esque guitar. The track’s video follows a similar path. A lyric video at its core, “The Runners” visuals include corny images attempting, but failing to signify emotion.
The Naked and Famous recorded Simple Forms at guitarist/vocalist/producer Thom Powers’ Echo Park home. The band had come close to tearing apart under the strain of the breakdown of the eight-year romance between Powers and co-vocalist Alisa Xayalith.
Simple Forms marks the group’s first release since 2013’s In Rolling Waves. They first burst onto the alt-rock scene with 2011’s Passive Me, Aggressive You.
