LISTEN: Francis and the Lights Release New Song “My City’s Gone” Featuring Kanye West

Back in July, Francis Starlite’s future-pop project Francis and the Lights teamed up with Kanye West and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon for “Friends,” pretty great song that also had a pretty great video. Following an incredibly brief period of musical silence, Francis And The Lights surprise-released Farewell, Starlite!, their debut full-length four days ago. West shows up once more on the album, on the spare and shimmering “My City’s Gone,” in a robotic vocoder vibe reminiscent of his 808s & Heartbreaks.

In an interview from 2011, Francis said “I love reading people’s Tweets. I loved when Kanye West had something every hour. It was so enjoyable and exciting. As a fan, that is what I want.”

Outside of his own project, Starlite has worked with Chance the Rapper on his latest record Coloring Book, getting a promotion from the Chicago MC as well with his debut.

He also performed first on the lineup at Chance’s Magnificent Coloring Day at Cellular Field in Chicago.

In addition to Chance The Rapper, however, Francis has worked with Frank Ocean on “Close to you You” on his new album as well as “Wild Love” featuring The Weeknd.

Much like when Bon Iver collaborated with Kanye and then blew up with fame, Francis has seen a recent spike in notoriety.

Christopher Lee: I am a college student from California. I am a massive fan of most things rock, and especially of all things Car Seat Headrest. Journalism has been a great passion of mine, and I hope that I'll be able to continue to merge my worlds of music and journalism as the years go on.
