Sony’s Computer Science Laboratory in Paris has been working on creating new music technologies in order to advance the creativity of music.
With the Flow Machines project, the team has created two songs that are composed by artificial intelligence. The goal of the project, according to the lab’s sites are to aim for an “abstract ‘style’ from concrete corpora (text, music, etc.), and turn it into a malleable substance that acts as a texture.”
The artificial intelligence learns how to play these songs by learning the musical styles from a large database. According to Pitchfork, the two songs were “Daddy’s Car” and “Mister Shadow”. “Daddy’s Car” follows the musical style of the Beatles, while “Mister Shadow” follows the musical style of Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and Cole Porter. The main lyricist, producer, arranger behind the artificial intelligence was French composer Benoît Carré.
