Inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Aphex Twin and adopting her grandmother’s nickname, Pixx (né Hannah Rodgers) is a 19 year old songwriter from Chipstead, just beyond the edges of south London who dropped her recording debut, the Fall In EP, in August of last year. According to her artist page, she was “born to a music-loving family, her creative side was nurtured and encouraged from a young age and her burgeoning talent didn’t go unnoticed, earning her a place at The BRIT School, the renowned performing arts college located not far from her home.”
With such pedigree, there was no way that she was not going to take a crack at the music industry, and her talent is already winning her some fans. Off the buzz of Fall In, Pixx dropped a one-off single “Baboo” earlier this spring with an accompanying music video, and it seems like she’s doing it again today with her new track “Grip.”
Featuring airy synths and complex percussive rhythms with trap influences, the instrumentation serves to lift up Rodgers’ ethereal vocals. As for the video, director James Slater uses some gravity-defying, disorienting effects to suspend the singer-songwriter in midair, flip her upside-down, and shift the balance of the room to lift her up in a somewhat different manner.
