LISTEN: La Sera Releases New Song “Queens”

The dreamy indie-pop duet who call themselves La Sera released a teaser today from their forthcoming EP Queens, scheduled to be released September 30th. The track, which shares the same title as the EP, is one of five songs that will be a part of Queens. This EP is being released through the label Polyvinyl; this is one their second release with the label, as they were previously signed with Hardly Art up until 2014.

The track is a fun and upbeat indie-pop shindig with a rhythmic consistency in both the vocals and guitar. In regard to the lyrics, Goodman and Wisenbaker have shared two completely different perspectives on the meaning of the song. Wisenbaker claims “Queens” is simply about “a leisurely stroll [he] took through Hollywood at dusk one night”, but Goodman counteracted that simplicity with some empowering wisdom, stating that “[Queens] stands for being an important, passionate, and loving person in your own life every day”. This variation in depths eludes to part of the reason they apparently balance each other out musically and romantically, and led them to marry in October of 2015.

La Sera has always been a time-traveler; their sound has evolved from a distinct reverb-heavy 60’s since the band’s birth, to a slightly more 80’s vibe with some underlying influence from bands like The Smiths on their fourth album Music for Listening to Music to, and back to that early 60’s girl group sound on this teaser track. This manipulation of time and space gives each of their albums a uniquely appealing sound, and keeps eager fans guessing as to what they can expect next from the diverse duo.

The band, which is mainly compromised of former bassist of the late Vivian Girls Katy Goodman, and L.A.-based musician and producer Todd Wisenbaker. Wisenbaker came into the picture on the album Hour of the Dawn, on which he contributed the lead guitar tracks but nothing more. It was not until Music for Listening to Music to that he worked in full collaboration with Goodman and was considered a permanent fixture in the band. Over the course of their existence members have come and gone to and from La Sera as if through a revolving door, and has included names like Daniel Gomez, Michael Gleeson, Jenn Prince and Scott Shannon for short periods of time.

The group plans to tour the country in an effort to raise awareness of their most recent album as well as this forthcoming EP.
