The annual 312 Urban Block Party is upon us again! Each year, Goose Island Beer Co. makes a point to give back to their loyal customers and the city of Chicago. Instead of just charging admission, all ticket revenue goes to 1 of 5 charities, and each person buying a ticket gets to choose which charity they want their money to go towards. This is the kind of block party where no dogs or children are allowed and all beers cost $3 flat. Now that I’ve got your attention, let’s talk about the music.
The first day, Against Me! is headlining with a bunch of other super talented musicians, including a stage full of local bands. Against Me! is known for their rough punk sound and strides towards social change. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Laura Jane Grace, is a pioneer in the punk movement. She is one of the first openly transgender women to take the helm of a punk rock band. Some of their newer music deals with the struggles she faced her entire life with being transgender, and it is incredibly powerful. All of their music – old and new – is extremely well-written and guaranteed to make you want to sing along.
Ringing in the end of the block party will be Dawes. Goose Island chose to mix up the two nights, starting with punk and ending with folk-rolk. They will bring more of a laid-back vibe to the end of the fest. With a sound that is very reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, as well as Neil Young, you will be unable to resist dancing along all night long. The $3 beer doesn’t hurt either. All tickets will be $10 and can be bought on the day of the show.
