Chet Faker no longer wants to be a “faker” — he recently announced that he is retiring his alias in exchange for his real name. From now on he will be performing and producing under his real name Nick Murphy.

The news was received yesterday, straight from the horse’s mouth (well, the horse’s Twitter account, close enough…), where he posted:

“Its been half a decade since I started releasing music as Chet Faker and all of you have been the driving force behind the music since.

theres an evolution happening and I wanted to let you know where its going.

the next record will be under my own name, Nick Murphy.

Chet Faker will always be a part of the music.

This is next.”

The stage name Chet Faker was homage to one of Murphy’s favorite jazz artists and major inspirations Chet Baker.

The Australian native won Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2012 Australia Independent Record Awards, and his EP Thinking in Textures won multiple awards, including Best Independent Release at the Rolling Stones Australia Awards in 2013. His only full-length album Built on Glass debuted at #1 on the Australian ARIA Charts, with three of the tracks taking up spots in Triple J’s Top 10 Hottest Songs of 2014. His cover of Backstreet’s “No Diggity” was featured in a Beck’s Sapphire commercial during the 2013 Super Bowl.

The newly-named Nick Murphy will be appearing at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris on October 27th, as well as at the O2 Academy in London on November 9th.
