Earlier this year, Serj Tankian of System of a Down had said in a Rolling Stone interview that he would be open to recording new album with the Armenian-American heavy metal band after speculating that the band might work on new record early 2015.
Though the band has toured together frequently since they ended a four year break in 2010, they have not been back in the studio creating music since before then. Serj has been busy making his own music- specifically focusing on a soundtrack for the film 1915, an informative dramatic film about the Armenian Genocide. The subject has been very close to his heart as he is considered one of the leaders in Armenian awareness in both his personal life and his music.

Serj has been busy making his own music for 1915, a film about the Armenian Genocide (an issue that he addresses often in SOAD’s music), and guitarist Daron Malakian was focused in his side project Scars on Broadway.
“We’re communicating and trying to see if we can bring our material together. There’s definitely a lot of communication going on, a lot of back and forth. I can’t make a statement in terms of whether we’re going to have a record or not, because we haven’t gone into the studio and done it. But there’s definitely communication going on, songs being played to each other and all that stuff, so it’s good. We’ll see what happens.” Tankian told Rolling Stone.”I think it would be great to create something brand new in a new direction. It would be very exciting, but everyone’s got to be on board, on the same page, and it’s got to be done in a way so that everyone is happy. If we can do that, we’ll do it.”
Tankian recently admitted that he had written several new rock songs and is in the process of deciding what to do with them said Blabbermouth. He told The Pulse Of Radio that he always liked to create the songs from start to finish on his own, before presenting them to the band.
“Even with System, I always wrote the songs by myself in my own studio,” he said. “I would write the songs, and have the vocals, have the whole arrangement done, then I’d take it to the band. But I’d still work the song from its inception to full form by myself. This is something I’d been doing for a very long time.”
After all this, on the night of August 31, bassist Shavo Odadjian posted two pictures of the band with their respective instruments, ready to play, on Instagram. Which would be quite exciting on its own, but the hashtags #systemofadown and #letsdothis made the posts all the more gripping for SOAD fans.
Could it really be that after 11 years, we’ll finally be hearing some new System Of A Down material? Unless this is preparation for a tour, which would still be great considering the infrequency of the band’s live performances. Either way, when SOAD starts dropping hints, something awesome is often soon to follow.
