David Pajo, is a man of many acts and many faces. A band member of Slint, David Pajo played music with the accompaniment of others. He was a band member, yet to step out on his own. Then and later, known as just Pajo, he was a solo act with his latest album being as far back as 2009, titled Scream With Me. On the other hand, known as a different alias called Papa M, David Pajo is a different version of himself within this created solo act of his. He takes on a new ownership of the same person, creating the sound known as Papa M. And, with excitement, people are noticing his return.
In 2004, Papa M released his solo album, Hole of Burning Alms, and that was the last heard from that side of Pajo, until now. Scheduled to release on November 11th this year, David Pajo is breaking his solo career’s silence and releasing Highway Songs. This marks Papa M’s return in nearly 12 years and Pajo’s solo return in nearly seven. “Walking on Coronado,” the album’s first single has recently been released and helps listeners preview Papa M’s comeback.
Drawing on sounds of all types, the instrumentation of Papa M’s sound is classified as moody, inquiring, reflective, and sometimes aggressive. Evoking emotion of all realms, Pajo’s music holds ground as a true art form, and this expression is bound to come across in Highway Songs. In earlier works of Pajo, he wavered between the energy he created with his music. At times, he sought a more intellectual side to his tone, setting forth feelings of freedom and joy. Although, at times Pajo’s sound took a darker turn and spurred negative thought. Even so, a long time off has allowed Pajo, or Papa M, to settle on his new found sound. In listening to “Walking to Coronado,” it can be guessed that Papa M will veer more towards the joyful and positive emotions seen in earlier works opposed to the gloomy attitude of some of his earlier days. “Walking to Coronado” instills a light and hopeful sound that can be defined as yearning to be an encouragement and inspiration in Papa M’s song.
