One of the most feel-good genres of music to exist is reggae. And that’s just a fact. Damian Marley has a unique take on Jamaican reggae, quickly making a name for himself when he began performing at the young age of 13. He very much so takes after his father, the great Bob Marley, one of the most (if not THE most) well-known voices in the reggae music scene. As soon as one of his songs starts playing, his rich voice and the contagious rhythm just makes you want to dance.
His flow is remarkable in all the different ways he changes the rhythm. Damian isn’t a rapper, but he does borrow some of the musical qualities of great rap music, mostly with the way he places emphasis on syllables and words. It’s obvious that reggae music is more than just a genre. It is more of a philosophy or way of life. Spreading love and human dignity to everyone around you is one of the huge messages that both Bob and Damian try to put across in all of their work.
Not only does he have a great voice and message, but he has managed to collaborate with a bunch of artists that are also extremely impressive in their own respects, like Nas. People like to put his music in the “reggae” box, but there is honestly no fair way to categorize it other than saying it sticks to Jamaican roots. His nickname of “Jr. Gong” is a take on his father’s nickname of “Tuff Gong”, which is a huge honor. Damian is going to put on a show that you’re not gonna want to miss, so I recommend buying a ticket before it’s too late.
