Alt R&B singer-songwriter Banks has released a new single, “Mind Games”, which will feature on upcoming album The Altar. She shared the video for previously released single “Gemini Feed” earlier this week.
“Mind Games” is a characteristic Banks track, featuring tortured, sauntering vocals over hauntingly mechanized production. Buzzing synths alternate with computerized vocals, create a dark, brooding atmosphere. Banks layers pure R&B vocals over the production, doing her best trip-hop era Martina Topley-Bird impression. Her lyrics augment the single’s darkness, questioning her romantic feelings for an undesired ex-suitor.
Banks will release The Altar on September 30 through Harvest. The album marks her LP since 2014’s Goddess, and second overall.
She premiered the album’s first single, “Fuck With Myself”, in July, and “Gemini Feed” followed in August. The Altar consists of 13 tracks, clocking in at just under 48 minutes long. Sohn, Lido, Hector Santizo, Lindsey Ramey, Tim Anderson and Al Shux each received production credits. She has not toured since December 2015.
