Mitski @ Gramps 11/12

Mitski is coming to perform at Gramps in Wynwood on Saturday, November 12th. Her music deals with issues of belonging that a lot of multiracial and cross-cultural people can relate with. If you like your indie rock with some melancholy and a bit of bite this is for you.

Mitski is a New York based indie rock performer who has been making music since 2012. Her first two albums were both recorded and self-released while she was still in school in New York. She is biracial, American and Japanese, and was born in Japan, but her family moved around a lot so she did not stay in any one place for too long. One of the things she was always surrounded by was her mom’s 70’s pop CDs, you can see some of the influence in her music. She has described herself as half American, half Japanese, but not fully either. Themes of belonging like this are explored in her music. Her most recent album “Puberty 2” was released in June of this year. Take a listen to two of her new songs below: “Happy” and “Your Best American Girl”.

I think Mitski is making some very creative music and pushing some boundaries and it’s great. She is talking about things people don’t always talk about. Gramps should be the perfect little venue to vibe to some Mitski in November. If you’re a fan of indie rock or just music with a good message, this is for you.

Henry Ehlebracht: I am an NYU student from Miami who loves writing. I am a dual major in Philosophy and Journalism and I'd love to share my thoughts on music with you. My two favorite music genres are definitely hip hop and electronic/dance, but I'm really open to anything that piques my interest. I'm currently in New York for school. Electronic album reviewer for MXDWN. Although I write about music for the website, my media interests stretch into many areas including movies and video games.
