Umphrey’s McGee @ Concord Music Hall 9/3

Imagine – the year is 1997 and you’re in a practice room at Notre Dame. Local bands Tashi Station and Stomper Bob are picking up instruments together – to form some kind of super-band. A super-jam-band. This was essentially the beginnings of Umphrey’s McGee.

While they are heavily influenced by classic rock and bands like Phish and Grateful Dead, Umphrey’s clearly nods its head to almost every genre. Experimental by nature, they have released a plethora of albums and even more live albums and DVDs that attest to their strengths in playing live shows. In concert they are known to play long and hard onstage, sometimes playing two sets a night.

If you enjoy songs that are straightforward, two minutes, and have four chord changes – this will not be the show for you. But if you enjoy improvisational music solos and tangents, songs that go in unexpected but wonderful directions, and an upbeat sound – this will definitely be the show for you.
