In an interview with The Guardian, De La Soul member Pos dropped the news that the hip-hop trio would be featured on the still-in-the-works Gorillaz album. This is not a shocking development, considering Gorillaz head-honcho Damon Albarn worked with Posdnous, Dave and Masoe’s ninth studio album and the Anonymous Nobody.
In the interview Pos reveals that Albarn was working with the group and rapper Snoop Dogg (who also appears on and the Anonymous Nobody) when chemistry took hold. Snoop said: “Hey man, we’ve never worked together, can we get this going?” He elaborated by saying that Albarn sat the group down and played some of the new Gorillaz album (which he said sounds “amazing”) and a track which they would “get in the studio and put that down” to complete.
The interview then takes a lighthearted turn, touching on acting alongside a cartoon in a cartoon world: “You get your little acting chops going. You’ve got to act like someone is standing next to you.”
It would not be the first time De La Soul has worked with Gorillaz, as the group was featured on the hit single “Feel Good Inc.” The song won a Grammy award for Best Pop Collaboration and stands as Gorillaz’ best-performing song commercially.
According to the Guardian piece, the new Gorillaz album is not expected to be released until some time in 2017. While the wait for a new Gorillaz album will be reaching into the six-year territory before it is released despite a promise it would come in 2016. However, that is to be expected with Albarn’s jam-packed schedule. He scored Alice in Wonderland, has a new album planned for his The Good The Bad and The Queen (featuring The Clash’s Paul Simonon) in the works. And of course there are his solo tours and albums plus working with the band that he was originally best known for, Blur.
