Los Angeles folk-rock act Dawes announces new 5th record We’re All Gonna Die due September 16th via the band’s own Hub Records. Dawes’ new album follows the release of their 2015 4th LP All Your Favorite Bands, which impressed both critics (Rolling Stone declared the album “Their strongest record since their 2009 debut”) and the charts (1st on Billboard’s US Folk Albums and the still impressive 37th on the Billboard Hot 200).
Dawes was formed in 2009 by brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith (vocals/guitar and drums respectively), Wylie Gelber (bass) and Tay Strathairn (keyboard). Their well-received debut LP, North Hills was recorded in a live setting to analog tape, resulting in a sound that Rolling Stone called “authentically vintage.” After gaining commercial ground with their sophomore record Nothing is Wrong (2011) and 3rd LP Stories Don’t End (2013), Dawes really set its own milestone with All Your Favorite Bands. NPR went as far to say “Dawes has managed to make an album that grapples with sadness in a way that avoids downbeat ballads. Instead, this is the sound of a band stretching out, letting the melodies and Taylor Goldsmith’s vocals illustrate the range and depth of doubt and regret as eloquently as any breakup lyric could possibly describe.”
We’re All Gonna Die was recorded at EastWest Studios (Los Angeles, CA) with additional recording at The Boat (Silverlake, CA) and was produced by Grammy nominated producer Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes). Mills’ pop sensibilities and propensity for fuzz are truly evident in the album’s lead single “When the Tequila Runs Out,” as well as the song’s music video. Directed by Kevin Hayes, the video was filmed with a slow motion camera capturing fun moments throughout a late night party as if it were slowly being recalled the next morning in a fuzzy hungover haze.
Of the album, Taylor Goldsmith explains, “These songs were all written in a very short period of time, very close together. In that sense I feel like there was a consistency in mood and outlook our other records don’t have. Pretty much every song on this record explores a difficult situation and tries to find a way to find the good in it, or at least remind yourself that it’s not always that big of a deal. After all, as scary as it is, we are all gonna die.”
