This year’s Outside Lands festival in San Francisco offered a lineup that included a slew of promising artists, from up-and-comers such as Vince Staples and Haim to established favorites such as LCD Soundsystem, Sufjan Stevens, and Radiohead. No act, however, was more of a surprise than The Muppets’ Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, the house band that continuously rocked “The Muppet Show.” The group made its “live’ debut at the festival this weekend.
The band – led by legendary drummer Animal and also consisting of Dr. Teeth, Floyd Pepper, Janice, Zoot, and Scooter – performed on the Lands End stage, the main performance area in the Golden Gate Park-hosted festival. They opened with the only original song of the set, “Can You Picture That?” from 1979’s The Muppet Movie. Between songs, a number of clips told the story of the band’s origins on Haight Street, while the puppeteers took breathers. The band returned to cover a number of hits – The Mowgli’s “San Francisco,” Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ “Home,” The Band’s “Ophelia,” and finally closed with Joe Cocker’s soulful rendition of The Beatles’s “With A Little Help From My Friends.” At this point, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem invited Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir to the stage to perform the closing tune.
