Irish avant-garde art-pop queen Roisin Murphy has announced her first ever full North American tour. While she played a one-off show in 2008, this will be her first full length tour of the states. She is embarking on this tour to promote her recently released album Take Her Up to Monto. Murphy recently made an appearance at Glastonbury Festival and will be performing at Pukkelpop.
Murphy rose to prominence as one half of the trip-hop group Moloko, whose music was characterized by a strange yet charming electronic dance pop sound. After releasing her debut solo album Ruby Blue, she gained critical acclaim for her riskier and more experimental sound. Murphy has a jazzy contralto voice range, and she uses this range to convey a wide variety of tone and texture within her music. Her over the top performances, idiosyncratic fashion style, and willingness to experiment have made her an icon in the art-pop world. Her theatrical nature, both in her live shows and in her music, has rightfully earned her a dedicated cult following. While outside observers may make an obvious comparison between Murphy and Lady Gaga, Murphy has said in the past that she has great respect for the artist.
