Kesha Drops Her Lawsuit Against Dr. Luke In California

Kesha and her producer Dr. Luke have been involved in a seemingly never ending legal battle. Now though, the end is in sight. Kesha has just dropped her lawsuit against the producer in California. This suit accused Dr. Luke of rape and sexual abuse. The trial was on hold as of last year because of pending charges against Kesha in New York. Dr. Luke brought Kesha to court in New York on charges of defamation. Kesha’s lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli, told Rolling Stone

“Kesha has dismissed her California action without prejudice while she pursues her appeal and other legal claims in the New York courts. Kesha is focused on getting back to work and has delivered 28 new songs to the record label. We have conveyed to Sony and the label Kesha’s strong desire to release her next album and single as soon as possible.”

The drama began in the fall of 2014, when Kesha sued Dr. Luke for sexual, verbal, physical, and emotional abuse. She claimed the producer forced her to ingest drugs and alcohol since she signed with him at age 18 in order to “lower her inhibitions”. The point of the lawsuit was to get released from her contract with Dr. Luke and bring the producer to justice.

Earlier this year in February, Kesha released a statement via Rolling Stone regarding her ordeal with Dr. Luke which read

“All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused…This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract – it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal. This is about being free from my abuser. I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser.”

Sony and Dr. Luke denied all of Kesha’s allegations.

Sony claimed that although Kesha was stuck in her contract, she was free to record with other Sony producers, not just Dr. Luke. On a more positive note, Kesha released her “True Colors” collaboration with Zedd in April. The artist is also working on a new album and is planning a tour under the name Kesha and The Creepies. She has recorded 28 new songs and submitted them to Sony in the hopes that they will soon be released. According to Petrocelli, Kesha hopes to release her new single and album as soon as possible.
