To commemorate their 7th anniversary, Third Man Records will soon reveal their attempt to play the first vinyl records in outer space. The record itself has been carefully selected – a gold-plated 12″ of Carl Sagan’s “A Glorious Dawn.” The song is a part of electronic musician John D. Boswell’s Symphony of Science project, aimed to “spread scientific knowledge and philosophy through musical remixes.” The song featured autotuned spoken words from Sagan and Stephen Hawking. The record is being celebrated as the label’s 3 millionth record pressed.
The vinyl will be played on the Icarus Craft, an invention of Kevin Carrico’s that’s being labeled as a “space-proof” turntable attached to a high-altitude balloon and customized specifically for the mission.
Third Man will be celebrating launch parties in the literal sense at both of its locations – Cass Corridor and Nashville. Attendees can view the mission, watch live bands perform, and get exclusive access to merchandise and limited edition 12″ gold vinyl copies of “A Glorious Dawn” and other limited LP records. DJ’s that will be announced later this week will play music at 11pm EST before the takeoff at 12pm EST.
