Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) has been busy lately making news for his words during certain shows. This past weekend, Tillman performed at the Newport Folk Festival. During his set he announced to the audience that he was offered $250,000 by Chipotle to cover “I Want it That Way” by The Backstreet Boys for an ad. He revealed that he refused the offer and told the audience “I just got asked to do a Chipotle commercial not that long ago. I’ll tell you this: They were going to pay me a quarter of a million dollars to sing ‘I Want It That Way’ by the Backstreet Boys.” He continued “I was like, cool, so then I could just buy, like, two Cadillacs and crash them together. I don’t want your fucking burrito money.” Tillman later explained that the telling of the story was meant as “a discussion on whether folk music is good for anything anymore other than just the selling of things.”
The Chipotle rant followed Tillman’s introspective moment on stage at XPoNential Fest in New Jersey. During his set he ranted about the harm of entertainment on society as well as the current state of the world. Since then, Tillman has been involved in some serious Twitter feuds. Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes) and Jim James (of My Morning Jacket) ended up covering the song for the commercial instead of Tillman. Watch the full video below.
On a more positive note, Father John Misty has just officially released his single “Real Love Baby” on all digital music platforms and streaming services. Listen to the single here.
