Indie pop act Merchandise have announced their album A Corpse Wired For Sound for a September 23rd release. Band members Carson Cox, Dave Vassalotti, and Pat Brady traveled both to Italy and Florida to record the album. They have released the second single off the album, “End of the Week”, and its music video. The video can be viewed below:
The main theme of the video concerns a mirror, which is broken in the end of the video. Regarding this, Cox, who directed the video, stated,
“The smashed mirror isn’t just a symbol of death. It’s the broken image of humanity reflecting back at everyone when they read the news. Reality is an unbearable pill to swallow this year. Somehow the evil people that make up society can still wake up everyday and look at themselves in the mirror.”
Merchandise helps differentiate itself from the numerous other indie pop acts making the rounds now by utilizing distorted vocals and elements of noise in their instrumentation. The walls of sound used by Merchandise, while not full-on shoegaze, help give the band a distinctive edge that helps them stand out from the usual bunch of glistening, glittery alt-pop acts. The wailing guitars permeated by the pulsating bass line push the boundaries of pop sensibility, creating an interesting fusion of shoegaze and dream pop.
