English electronic music group Mentronomy, led by Joseph Mount, has released a trippy new video for their single “Night Owl”. The video for the track can be viewed below:
The vague and bizarre video was directed by Mr. Ozio, aka Quentin Dupieux, who is most famous for the indie dark comedy film Rubber. The satirical film concerned a sentient tire that would murder people with its psychic abilities. “Night Owl” is the first video that Mr. Ozio has directed for another artist since 2005. The video itself concerns what at first seems like a fun, normal road trip, but quickly devolves into mind-bending chaos. Mount, the protagonist of the video, is constantly being murdered by everyone he meets, including his girlfriend. Whenever he dies, his body instantly transforms into a disturbing mannequin. The surreal horror continues, as Mount is constantly being pursued by a disembodied human brain and the Grim Reaper himself.
The track “Night Owl” is a disco-groove jam that pulsates with bass and oozes with charm. The pop instrumentation is very slick and tight, and the laid back yet worried vocals invoke the image of a sleepless night. The record this track is on, Summer 08, is intended by Mount to be his most mature pop offering yet. Another single off the album, “Hang Me Out to Dry”, can be listened to here. The hype for this project is massive; among Metronomy’s dedicated fans include Kanye West, Tyler the Creator, Lady Gaga, and Daft Punk.
