Last week, we reported that Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy was leaving Franz Ferdinand, as Consequence of Sound reports, to spend more time with his family and to focus “on production and writing some completely different things for a bit.” McCarthy has since been efficient with this time and has already formed a new group named Manuela, consisting of him and his wife, singer Manuela Gernedel.
The duo has shared a song, their first single, titled “No Cracks In the Concrete.” Gernedel has discussed the track with Stereogum and made the following statement.
Lyrically ‘Cracks In The Concrete’, like much of the album, is skipping back and forth between a narration and internal monologue. The line ‘cracks in the concrete’ was partly inspired by the French phrase ‘sous les páves, la plage!’ which came up during the student revolts there in May ’68. Roughly translated it says ‘there is sand underneath the pavement!’ It’s talking about the potential of things breaking and breaking up things. Everything is morbid and falling apart and you have to keep on telling yourself that it’s going to work itself out (‘everything is healing’).
The members of Manuela continue to work on completing an LP and plan to include guest appearances from friends such as Django Django’s Jim Dixon, Veronica Falls’ Roxanne Clifford, and Franz Ferdinand’s Paul Thompson.
