An unreleased Sufjan Steven’s album was found in a Brooklyn Dumpster by an anonymous New York native.
Over the years Sufjan Stevens has released a total of seven studio albums A Sun Came (2001), Enjoy Your Rabbit (2001), Michigan (2003), Seven Swans (2004), Illinois (2005), The Age of Ads (2010), and Carrie and Lowell (2015). However, there may officially be one more album to ad to this extensive list.
The identity of the man who found the album is still unknown. However, on Reddit the anonymous founder posted, “I used to work next door to Sufjan’s studio in Brooklyn. One day, while he was renovating the place, he threw a bunch of stuff into the building’s dumpster. I salvaged this…as far as I know, I don’t think it’s ever been released.”
The name of the unreleased album seems to be named Stalker: The Definitive Album by Sufjan Stevens. According to the text inside the CD case, this album was supposed to be released in 1998 via Asthmatic Kitty. The more shocking side of this “new”album are the songs featured on it.
The fourteen song tracklist features eerie titles such as “I Know Where Your Kids Go To School”, “No More Mister Nice Guy”,and “Kommin’ Ta Getcha”. It is somewhat remarkable that Stalker: The Definitive Album by Sufijan would have became his debut album rather than A Sun Came. The album’s legitimacy has not yet been confirmed, but if proven authentic there is a good chance this piece may be worth an ample amount of money.
On a legal note, Asthmatic Kitty has made it clear they do not plan on making a claim against the anonymous dumpster diver. Rather, they have sent out a gentle statement addressed to the anonymous founder. They say, “We don’t do that. Instead, I’m asking you, as someone who’s also had the special privilege of hearing unreleased music, to politely ask that you keep it to yourself.”
On his summer tour, Sufijan Stevens has yet to comment on this album and its authenticity. I guess we will have to see what he has to say once off tour.
