The entire genre of post-metal owes its existence to Neurosis. Along with Godflesh and Melvins, Neurosis broke away from metal conventions to create a sound that combined the raw intensity of metal with orchestral-style layered textures and crescendos. Their 1996 album Through Silver in Blood is considered by many to have invented the genre. The album featured a very industrial-inspired sound that took influence from major emerging metal sub-genres (doom metal, sludge metal, and avant-garde metal), all propped up by a textured backdrop of synthesizers, samples, brass, and string instruments. The album had a droning and dreary, yet overwhelming and dangerous composition.
With their newly announced upcoming album Fires Within Fires, Neurosis hopes to pay tribute to their storied past while also heading into unfamiliar and experimental directions. By balancing delicate beauty with depressing, crushing dreariness, Neurosis hopes to create a formidable yet vulnerable epic.
