Orishas @ The Fillmore Miami Beach 8/20

Orishas is coming to The Fillmore in Miami Beach on Saturday, August 20th. With so many Cubans in the city I feel like this concert should be a big one. Symbolizing a blend of cultures that fans around the world have embraced, Orishas is an awesome hip hop trio.

Orishas was formed in the early 90s under the name Amenaza. They come from Havana, Cuba. Amenaza was able to gain a ton of popularity in Cuba and eventually moved out to France where they were able to get better production quality for their music. In 1999 they released their debut album as Orishas. The band has released 4 albums with their most recent being “Cosita Buena” from 2008. They have begun to record new material this year. Orishas has created a link between African and Latin culture with their music. The name Orishas refers to deities in the traditional Yoruba religion from Africa. These deities are also worshiped in the South American religions of Santeria and Candomble.

Their songs include references to the African culture they are connection with and in general seek to bring the musical style of Hip Hop to a wider Latin audience who may feel a connection to these roots. Their songs “El Kilo” and “Cosita Buena” above show their style well. The concert in August is at a great venue and it is a great chance to see some original Cuban music that is popular in the country.

My two favorite music genres are definitely hip hop and electronic/dance, but I'm really open to anything that piques my interest. I'm currently in New York for school. Electronic album reviewer for MXDWN. Although I write about music for the website, my media interests stretch into many areas including movies and video games.
