For the first time in over a decade, acclaimed bassist Jah Wobble will be touring the United States. The tour sets off September 21st in New York City and wraps up October 2nd in Los Angeles.
Jah Wobble (who gets his name from a fellow musician drunkenly slurring his name John Wardle) first rose to prominence as the bassist of post-punk band Public Image Ltd. PIL, which emerged from the breakup of the Sex Pistols. The band challenged the established punk scene with droning, bass-heavy noise rock. Accompanied by John Lydon’s distinct and charismatic singing, the band became what NME described as “arguably the first post-rock group”. While not as commercially successful as the Sex Pistols, the band enjoyed critical acclaim among those in the post-punk scene. Jah Wobble left PIL after the release of the band’s second album and formed his own experimental instrumental band: Jah Wobble and the Invaders of the Heart. The band enjoyed moderate success touring, but Jah Wobble’s excessive drinking took their toll on the band, forcing him to work a variety of day jobs to get by. After reforming Invaders of the Heart and releasing the live album Without Judgement, Jah Wobble successfully reinvigorated his career. In 2012, Jah Wobble reunited with Pistols guitarist Keith Levene on an album titled Yin & Yang.
Through his career with the Invaders of the Heart, Jah Wobble has proven himself to be an innovative and versatile artist. His music contains elements of jazz, ambiance, and most notably, world music. World music is the combination of Western popular music conventions with neotraditional non-Western music. On August 29th, the group’s new album Everything is No Thing will release, adding another notch to Jah Wobble’s complex but acclaimed musical history. Jah Wobble himself also painted the cover to Everything is No Thing, saying “I often paint strange geometrical shapes. It sort of co-relates to my bass playing.”
