White Sea, the solo outlet for former M83 vocalist Morgan Kibby, released new single yesterday, entitled “Ellipses”. The track marks her fourth single released this year and comprises part of Kibby’s free interactive art project Postcards From Nowhere.

“Ellipses” sees Kibby break from her usual pop balladry, pushing toward a more frenetic sound. The song enters with a lone, noise rock guitar, eventually welcoming Kibby’s soaring voice into the mix. Her vocals eventually become more punctuated, while the instrumentation drops into a pulsating mix of harsh synths. As its name indicates, “Ellipses” elliptically alternates between guitar and synth-led instrumentation.

The track continues Kibby’s recent fascination with the apocalypse, seeking to find the correct response to the end of the world. Kibby recently told Spin when faced with end of the world, the best mode of action is “very clearly to make love to someone”. “Ellipses” is a harsh track devoid of warmth, reflecting Kibby’s lyrical mood.

Kibby, as White Sea, issued her most recent LP, In Cold Blood, in 2014 to critical acclaim. She also composed the original score for French film Bang Gang, and is planning to continue issuing music through Postcards From Nowhere. Kibby released singles “Secret”, “Bloodline”“Arcadia”  earlier this year as part of her interactive art project.

M83 recently issued Junk, their first release since Kibby’s 2015 departure from the group. Kibby left the group to focus on her solo output through her White Sea project.
