With the world a bit shocked at the news that the United Kingdom officially voted to exit the European Union last night, many prominent musicians from the country spoke out about the “Brexit.” Most expressed fear, anger, dismay and maybe even a little embarrassment as the island nation officially turned its back towards its European brethren.
Damon Albarn was the first person at Glastonbury to mention the result of the vote, stating that “Democracy failed us because it was ill-informed.”
Disclosure expressed disbelief at the results on the band’s Twitter page with a simple “What the FUCK!!!” and “Moving to Mars with Bowie.” Johnny Marr took bit more eloquent approach on social media, stating “No one ever said that the majority know what they’re doing. All the more reason for the rest of us to stick together.” The then adding “Viva la resistance.” Geoff Barrow of Portishead and BEAK> expressed his dismay in no uncertain terms:
And finished off with this:
Glastonbury added:
Adding to the range of emotions felt by those in the UK, pop singer Ellie Goulding stated her fear and sadness: “I truly believe this is one of the most devastating things to happen during my lifetime. I felt a fear I’ve never felt this morning.”
Franz Ferdinand vocalist Alex Kapranos took the older generation to task over the vote, as the majority of those voting in favor of the “Brexit” were over 40: “Baby Boomers. The most selfish generation. Gifted in abundance from generations before. Stole from all generations to come after.”
Stuart Braithwaite of Scottish post-rock band Mogwai alluded to his homeland’s decision to remain in the United Kingdom a few months ago (Scotland overwhelmingly voted against leaving the European Union), first posting “My worst case scenarios of worst case post #indyref scenarios never looked this bad. Honestly.” He then added “I think that there will be some surprising converts to the Scottish independence cause by the time the day is out. Lets welcome them all.”
