Hammers of Misfortune has released their new song “Sea of Heroes”. “Sea of Heroes” is the second song released that will be featured on their upcoming album Dead Revolution, which is set to release on July 22, 2016.
Hammers of Misfortune have consistently created a vintage style that is unusually described as “progressive metal”. The “progressive metal” sound in this case can be considered amongst the sounds of a mix between Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pink Floyd, and even Queen. These comparisons seem to be a bit overstated, but Hammers of Misfortune have been bringing music to the public with the same ability of the bands they have been compared to. Much like their comparisons, Hammers of Misfortune have been able to make catchy sounds that still capture a sense of emotion because of their moving lyrics.
John Cobbett is one of the most successful heavy-metal songwriters in the industry, and his talents are enhanced even greater when he is working with a band as good as the members of Hammers of Misfortune. Hammers of Misfortune has always veered towards focusing on political topics for its music, which has allowed the band to make music containing a classic feel seem new and fresh. The bands new album follows in the footsteps of their excellent 17th Street album that released in 2011. The bands upcoming sixth album Dead Revolution is said to revolve around the unpleasant consequences of San Francisco’s gentrification. The title track off of the album was released a few weeks ago and it gives great insight into what the album will express, “The better world you were trying to build is/Laughing in your face” Hutton sings. Dead Revolution will feature many of the musicians that worked on the bands previous album 17th street. The album will include keyboardist and singer Sigrid Sheie (of Vhol and Amber Asylum) and guitarist Leila Abdul-Rauf, who fronts the death metal act Vastum. The largest change to the new albums musicians is behind the kit, where Death Angel’s Will Carroll steps in for longtime drummer Chewy Marcelo.
Hammers of Misfortune’s newest single “Sea of Heroes” from their upcoming album Dead Revolution picks up in momentum for the album. Stereogum gave a their take of the new song describing the sound as, “a tense mid-paced banger that falls after a pair of thrashier tunes — a tried-and-true pacing maneuver that the band handles with their characteristic unearthly flair”, and the “song’s thrumming rhythmic pulse supports layer upon layer of twining harmony between the band’s three vocalists, keyboards, and stringed instruments, especially in its soaring bridge.
