Rhapsody, the online music subscription service, has decided to rebrand itself and change its name. The new name they chose is not exactly new, but rather a bit of a nostalgic throwback. The name in question is none other than “Napster.”
If you don’t remember, Napster was a file-sharing service in which users were able to share and download music files over the internet for free. The company started in 1999 but soon came under legal fire for copyright infringements, and shortly after, shut down in 2001.
Napster changed their ways and changed their company model to be more of an online music store. Then, in 2011, Rhapsody bought Napster and all of its rights, including its name.
Thus fast forward to today, where Rhapsody has decided to change its name to Napster. As the company stated, other than the name change, the entire company will remain the same.
As the company stated, ““No changes to your playlists, favorites, albums, and artists. Same music. Same service. Same price. 100% the music you love. Stay tuned!”
It is unknown how the rebranding will affect their business, and why the decided to change it, but it certainly is an interesting and nostalgic throwback.
