Phantogram announces a new album and fall tour for 2016. The critically-acclaimed electro-pop duo announced the release date of their third album, Three, following the premiere of their new song “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show yesterday. The album will be available September 16 on digital platforms.
Phantogram is a duo made up of Sarah Barthel and and Josh Carter introduced back in 2007. Recently, the duo linked up with Big Boi to create Big Grams, along with self-titled EP. But, it still has been more than two years since we have heard any solo record by the duo until yesterday. Three follows Phantograms 2014 album Voices.
Pitchfork recently interviewed the duo on their upcoming album where Barthel describes it as, “It’s a lot more fucking boombastic and heavy”. She also said, “I think the record, to us, is about heartbreak. We’ve kind of had a tough year, so a lot of inspiration and drive came from our own experiences.”
Barthel and Carter revealed that they collaborated with a lot of more people for their upcoming album for inspiration, “over time, working with people like the Flaming Lips and Big Boi and Miley and A-Trak and the Antlers and different friends got us really inspired—the notion that you can learn a lot from all those people and gain inspiration. So we went to Atlanta for a week and fucked around with the-Dream and Tricky Stewart, and Ricky Reed. It’s good to gain new perspective”.
The duo also talked about their growth as artists, “I feel like we’ve really grown organically, in the right way as a band. We toured on Eyelid Movies for three years straight and we really tried to do everything the right way. I think that’s how we’ve gotten to where we are now as a band. We’ve just toured, we’ve honed our craft as performers and musicians, and we keep growing. Really, I think that’s the reason why we’re at where we’re at now, mentally and artistically”, Carter says. “It kind of happened as natural as you could possibly want it. You can always keep that direction and stay indie, and stay snobby, and we totally were. We were like, “No one’s going to hear our songs until they are completely finished, done, like not even our manager.” It was like, ”No one has a say, it doesn’t matter, it comes from us completely, please leave.” We were like that for a really long time and we loved it because that’s a really incredible feeling, but I think that we just wanted to grow, and we wanted to get our music out to more people. And I think that was why we took the direction that we did after finally building yourself up as organically as possible until the next step”, Barthel says.
